Here's how Jo Blundell (Marketing—Retention Manager) explains the history of the awards.
The 2014 Kitomba NZARH Business Awards was the 9th annual Business Awards.
The first Business Awards were held in 2006, where Kitomba, along with a group of likeminded salon owners got together on Waiheke Island—about 30 people in total—to start something new. The idea was to build a culture of recognising and celebrating business excellence in the New Zealand hairdressing industry.
In 2010, the New Zealand Hair and Beauty Industry Training Organisation (HITO), New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers (NZARH), and Kitomba brought our awards together and the Industry Awards (IA) were born. The fundamental reason for holding these awards has not changed—creating and sustaining a culture, which recognises and celebrates the essentials of our industry:
- Excellent training
- Fostering and recognising talent—young and experienced
- Running a sound and profitable business
- And this year for the first time, creative and artistic excellence with the inclusion of the NZARH Photographic and Oceanic competition
As the awards have matured, we’ve seen many people enter the awards over several years running, with each entry adding valuable ideas and lessons, which enable them to improve their business, their education, and enable them to re-enter being better, stronger, and ultimately more successful.
Sponsors of the Kitomba NZARH Business Awards were:
Kitomba works very closely with industry partners (Wella, Schwarzkopf and L’Oréal), and our sponsorship relationships have been born out of this close relationship and mutual desire to lift the standards of (and celebrate) business excellence in this industry to create healthy, profitable businesses.
Our relationship with 2degrees is very new, but they are big supporters of innovation, fun and hard work, and align really well with the awards.
